Picture Day is quickly Approaching By Darren Anderson

Whether you’re pretty, ugly or share a little bit of both sides, picture day is right around the corner (September 17th to be exact). This will be be your day to shine and look good for the camera…hopefully. Since these are yearbook photos, it is key to look as close to your best as possible. Remember, everyone will see your picture, EVERYONE. If you’re not an attractive person, it’s OK , just show off that smile. If you have not so great teeth though or no teeth at all, we can Photoshop in some for you or you can just do the closed mouth smile, you know, the one you give to strangers in the grocery store.

This year, you’re able to publish your yearbook pictures on a personal dog tag (brand new), a calendar, small magnets for your fridge and even a CD you can share with your family and friends. so remember that date 9/17 and be prepared to look fantastical.

Hit The Ground And Start Running By: Calvin and Saijean

The school year has just started and cross-country is already up and running. Led by Christy Kunkle, a teacher and a coach, the team has made progress this year. Running between 25 and 45 miles a week is how they train. The leading male runner (Ryan Ragoonath) has run a personal best of 16 minutes and 49 seconds for the 5K (3.1 miles ). Ryan described this season as ” Interesting and exciting ” and said ” I look forward to how the rest of the season goes”. Coach Kunkle says she hopes ” to get Ryan and Christina Nikolaou to make states”. Their next meet/competition is September 10th, at Mcalpine Creek Park.

Welcome to the new school of Executive Leadership By Darren Anderson

Welcome to the new school of executive leadership and entrepreneurial development (long name, right?) with a population of about 585 students currently enrolled, the school is at a good size and continues to grow. The current principal is this cool guy named Mr. Crook. He’s been working as an overall principal for about 8 years, but since this particular school is new and everything this will be his first year as principal of executive leadership. There’s another important person besides the principal and that’s the dean of students, which would be a chill Mr. Garcia. If you ask him what he does for the students in the school of executive leadership he won’t just give you one answer because he does many things. Some of the main things Mr. Garcia does for the students though, he advocates for them (basically supports and helps them any way possible) He also helps put them in a position to be successful in the future. When the new school surfaced, everyone had the same question “who came up with the idea of combining Global and Business?” well you can thank those important people in central office for that, they wanted to provide more opportunities and choices for the students.

I know you asked yourself at least once, “What’s the meaning behind that long school name, executive leadership and entrepreneurial development?” Well, the focus of the school is trying to design young business owners and entrepreneurs. The intriguing thing that makes the school of executive leadership so unique and different from the other schools in Olympic is that there are two, not one…but two great academies. That’s the academy of finance and the academy of hospitality and tourism. There’s only one thing that is more important than the school itself and that’s the students, so we had to ask the students on their opinions of the new school idea, “I think it was a good idea, it gives you a chance to meet new people instead of seeing the same faces everyday”-Will Presley. There are a lot of great things coming from Executive leadership this year so don’t sleep on them and be prepared for what they bring to the table.

Ms. McInnis and the New Arts and Technology School by Alana Askew

This is Sonya McInnis’ 3rd year as principal of the Renaissance School of Arts and Technology. She told me a little about the school this week. The school recently added Academy of Information Technology to the curriculum because “Information Technology is one of the faster growing career fields with in the United States and the Charlotte region.” The school also offers the visual and performing arts program which includes dance, theater, interior design, art, and photography along with the technology classes. This school is preparing students for the world after high school. With classes and clubs to prepare students for post secondary opportunities such as computer programming, audio video productions, web design, game arts, graphics, and photography, students will be able to venture out into the real world for jobs after college. And speaking of college, the school helps students get internships to many companies to work and job shadow, and partner up with colleges such as UNCC and CPCC to take college courses to help them get ahead. The Renaissance School of Arts and Technology partners up with companies like Time Warner Cable, Microsoft, Discovery Place, Siemens, and many more to connect with students. They also partner up with foreign exchange students and invite students from all over the world to visit our school. You can clearly see that the Renaissance School of Arts and Technology has a lot in store for their students this year.

Mr.Garcia at Executive Leadership

Mr.Garcia is the Dean of students at the school of Executive Leadership and Entrepreneurial Development. This is Mr.Garcia’s second year at Olympic , although it is his 12th year working in education. Mr.Garcia likes his job because he “enjoys interacting with all of the students” and that “the staff are great to work with.” As a teacher, Mr.Garcia felt that he was more limited to the student he could work with. Now, Mr.Garcia gets to interact with many more students, as well as seeing and helping more students reach their goals.
The school of Executive Leadership and Entrepreneurial Development is a great place for students to focus on business and tourism. Me.Garcia hopes to see the juniors and seniors get internships so that they can apply their skills to the real world. Business and Global were combined to make this school, however Mr.Garcia says that there is no difference among the students. Mr.Garcia thinks it is great to be a Trojan!

T.E.A.M the new manufacturing school by: Kabrea Ward

The newest school in Olympic Community of Schools is T.E.A.M. T.E.A.M. stands for Technology Entrepreneurship Advanced Manufacturing. Mr.Ward is the principal. He has been a principal for 8 years as of this school year and loves his job. The school offers P.L.T.W. classes, introduction to engineering, principles of engineering, engineering design, business classes and much more.

The school currently has only ninth and tenth graders in their school. So at the moment there are no internships or summer jobs. But in the near future there will be internships. Going to T.E.A.M. students can be offered many job opportunities throughout their four years. “We will allow them to have high paying jobs shortly after high school through certification or 2 year associate degree” – Mr.Ward.

So if you enjoy engineering and machines or maybe want to make a career out if it consider T.E.A.M as a school.

OHS school locations

By: Ali Ismail

To compensate for the amount of students at Olympic community of schools this year, all the schools have been moved around to control traffic. Renaissance has moved to Global’s old hall way, upstairs. Biotech has mostly stayed the same, with the exception of a couple classrooms being moved downstairs. METS is in the same building. TEAM has been moved to the old Renaissance trailers, with a few classes in the building. The manufacturing school has combined Business and Global, and can be found in Business’ old hallway. One student, Harrison M., says “The schools are much more organized now.” No one we interviewed knows if the school changes are permanent or if schools will repaint their hallways to their school colors and settle in.
